Interim provost Bruce Carney has been named to take the position permanently, pending trustee approval.

Carney was picked after a national search that brought three finalists to interview for the position on campus.

Carney is a surprise pick for provost, not having been one of the finalists. He indicated previously that he intended to be in the position only temporarily.

Police arrested a Pittsboro man at 11:26 p.m. Wednesday at 602 Gomains Ave.

UNC’s Information Technology Services has planned a major emergency outage for March 13 to conduct “critical maintenance” on its data center.

The outage will last from 4 p.m. March 13 until 8 a.m. March 14, for a total of 16 hours.

Services that will be affected include UNC e-mail, Connect Carolina, Finance Central, Student Central and others.

The following dining locations will be open for limited hours during spring break.

-Top of Lenoir: open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today; closed Saturday to March 13; open 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 14

-Alpine Bagel Cafe: open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today; closed Saturday and Sunday; open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to March 12; closed March 13 and 14

A new study by UNC researchers has found that young children in the U.S. are now consuming a large portion of their diets through snacking on salty chips, candy and other junk food.

Snacking now comprises up to 27 percent of children’s daily calories, the study found. It was published in the March issue of the Health Affairs journal.

The Chapel Hill Police Department is taking applications for a Citizens Police Academy, a 10-week program designed to introduce participants to the workings of the police department.

The applications, which are available online at bit.ly/CHpoliceacademy, are due by March 12, and the program will begin April 6.

The academy will meet each Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
